Description

The Oosi Kattam (needle-fine checks) is one of the most elegant and technically demanding patterns in Kanchipuram weaving. In this Tomato Red Kanchipuram Silk Saree, the Oosi Kattam is rendered across the entire body using genuine zari — creating a fine, shimmering grid of checks that catch the light beautifully against the deep tomato red ground.

‘Oosi’ means needle in Tamil, and the name describes perfectly the precision required to weave these ultra-fine checks. Each square of the check pattern must be woven at exact intervals, demanding years of skill from the weaver. The resulting fabric has a texture that is rich, structured and deeply satisfying to the touch.

The saree features a traditional Kanpetu border — a bold, heritage-style woven border synonymous with classic Kanchipuram design. A plain blouse with a woven border provides a clean, sophisticated finish. The Double/Side (D/S) construction ensures the border is woven separately and interlocked — a mark of authentic Kanchipuram craftsmanship.

🧵 The Craft Behind This Saree
Oosi Kattam weaving on a pit loom requires the weaver to set a very specific reed count and warp tension to create uniformly fine checks. The Kanpetu border is woven simultaneously on a separate shuttle system, then interlocked with the body — a process that adds hours to the weaving time but results in a saree that lasts generations.

🌿 Care Instructions
Dry clean only to preserve silk lustre and zari brilliance. Store in a breathable muslin or cotton cloth to prevent moisture damage. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to retain colour vibrancy. Do not fold along zari lines; roll gently to prevent creasing.

📝 Note
Slight colour variations may occur due to photographic lighting or screen settings. Each saree is handwoven — minor irregularities are the hallmark of authentic craftsmanship.
