Description
The Veldhari Kattam (வேல்தரி கட்டம்) is one of Kanchipuram’s most storied and distinctive design traditions. The name comes from ‘Vel’ — the sacred spear of Lord Murugan — and ‘Thari’ — the loom. Together, they describe a design of vertical stripes that runs along the length of the saree, created by alternating between two different weave structures or thread colours in the warp. The result is a pattern of clean, elegant vertical lines that give the saree a tall, graceful visual flow.
In this Red Kanchipuram Silk Saree, the Veldhari Kattam is woven across the body in the classic check formation — vertical stripes intersected by horizontal elements to create a full check (Kattam) effect. Peacock Chakra Butta motifs are woven in genuine zari across the body, adding a layer of organic beauty to the geometric structure. The contrast green blouse creates a vivid, complementary foil to the red body — a classic Kanchipuram colour pairing.

🧵 The Craft Behind This Saree
Veldhari Kattam requires the loom warp to be threaded with alternating colours or thread types at precise intervals — a setup process that can take a full day before a single thread of weft is laid. The vertical stripes emerge naturally from this warp arrangement, and maintaining their evenness across the full length of the saree is a mark of weaving mastery.
🌿 Care Instructions
Dry clean only to preserve silk lustre and zari brilliance. Store in a breathable muslin or cotton cloth to prevent moisture damage. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to retain colour vibrancy. Do not fold along zari lines; roll gently to prevent creasing.
📝 Note
Slight colour variations may occur due to photographic lighting or screen settings. Each saree is handwoven — minor irregularities are the hallmark of authentic craftsmanship.
